Saint Irenaeus was a bishop and theologian who lived in the 2nd century AD. He was born in what is now modern-day Turkey and was a disciple of Saint Polycarp, who was a disciple of the apostle John. Irenaeus is best known for his role in the development of early Christian theology, particularly in the area of Christian apologetics. He is considered one of the earliest Christian writers to provide a comprehensive account of Christian teachings and to defend the faith against Gnostic heresies.

Irenaeus wrote several important works, including "Against Heresies," which is one of the earliest examples of a systematic defense of Christian theology. In this work, he refutes various Gnostic teachings and emphasizes the unity of the Christian faith. He also wrote "Proof of the Apostolic Preaching," which is a summary of Christian teaching and an apologetic work aimed at establishing the validity of the Christian faith. Irenaeus is remembered as a defender of the faith and as a teacher of orthodox Christian doctrine. He is venerated as a saint by the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, and his feast day is celebrated on June 28th.
